and It all started when...

The colourful history of the Kaijakka restaurant is like a time travel through the changes in Finnish restaurant culture and the community of its region. Its roots go back decades, and its walls carry many stories - moments of joy, challenges and unforgettable encounters. Many may remember Kaijakan for its festive dance evenings, daytime dances, bold experiments and a distinctive atmosphere that has endured through the ages.

This article dives into the unique history of Kaijakka, decade by decade, and reveals how the restaurant has managed to keep its place in the hearts of locals, amid changing trends and times.

The 60s: from challenging early years to the new!

The story of the restaurant began in 1964, when it was initially a club restaurant of the Tampere Professional Club. Although the first years were not easy, they provided important lessons for future success. The challenges the restaurant faced in its early years, such as failed food offerings and management challenges, were part of a growth process that helped the restaurant find its own direction.

The change of leadership in 1966 was a turning point. Although the original manager did not get a licence and his employment ended, this brought with it the opportunity to renew. The restaurant was temporarily closed, allowing space to reflect on new directions and freshen up for the future.

At the beginning of 1967, a new entrepreneur was found for Kaijakka, bringing with him new energy and ideas. The restaurant reopened to the public and was officially renamed Kaijakka, the club's nickname from the start. It was a new beginning, a move towards a brighter future. In its very first summer in 1967, Kaijakka expanded by opening an open-air restaurant, which brought the restaurant more customers and strengthened its position as a popular meeting place in the area.

Although Kaijakka faced challenges in the 1960s, these experiences strengthened its foundations and the restaurant was ready to build on its success in the decades to come.

The 70s: becoming Finland's most famous restaurant

The 1970s was a time of success for Kaijakka, when he rose to the attention of the whole of Finland. The restaurant gained enormous popularity, especially thanks to its daytime dances, which became national hits. These dances attracted customers from far and wide and were an integral part of Kaijakka's appeal.

For a year, the restaurant also offered morning dances, starting as early as 05:00. This made Kaijakas exceptional, as the restaurant was only closed for an hour a day, between 4am and 5am. This unique operating model helped the restaurant to stand out and attract customers from all over Finland.

However, as before, Kaijakka also faced difficult moments. In the spring of 1975, the restaurant had to close its doors again due to financial difficulties. The situation seemed bleak for a while, but Kaijakka's flexibility and appeal did not let the situation persist. The doors were reopened later that month, and the restaurant returned stronger than ever.

Kaijakka was re-established as a food and dance restaurant, attracting more and more customers. The revival was even more successful than before, and by the late 1970s Kaijakka had established itself as one of Finland's best-known restaurants. This era confirmed the legend of Kaijakka, which continued to live on in the decades to come.

The 80s: consolidation, renovations and new experiments

The 1980s were a more stable, if somewhat quieter, period for Kaijakka compared to earlier decades. The restaurant's owners at the time took care of business, and the restaurant continued to operate well throughout the decade. Although there are not many major events to mention from the period, the restaurant was still well run. Regular renovations were carried out and the business was profitable throughout the decade.

In 1987, Kaijakka got new owners, who decided to update the restaurant's appearance significantly. Under their leadership, the restaurant underwent an extensive renovation, and all the furniture was replaced. The changes also affected the various areas of the restaurant, including the temporary renaming of the lower bar to Pub Armaada. This brought a new atmosphere to Kaijakka and attracted customers to explore the updated surroundings.

The new owners also wanted to bring something completely new to Kaijakka's offerings, and so they decided to start karaoke, which at the time was still a relatively unknown form of entertainment in Finland. The entrepreneurs tried to entice customers to sing by offering free beer to those who dared to step up to the microphone. Unfortunately, however, karaoke proved too new and unfamiliar for many people and did not achieve the desired popularity.

The lack of popularity of karaoke, combined with other financial challenges, led to the restaurant's owners eventually going bankrupt. The 1980s thus ended in a difficult situation for Kaijaca, creating new challenges for the coming decades.

The 90s: adjustment and bold solutions

Nineties brought significant changes and new challenges to Kaijakka restaurant. The glory of previous decades began to fade, and the restaurant had to adapt to changing circumstances.

In 1994, Kaijakka once again underwent major changes in the direction of its business. An erotic bar was opened downstairs, which brought the restaurant a new clientele and increased interest in the premises. Upstairs, the dancing continued, now to the tune of karaoke, which had gained more ground among Finns towards the end of the decade. These changes breathed new life into Kaijakka, but at the same time the traditional atmosphere of the restaurant began to change, and this contributed to the composition of the clientele.

For Kaijakka, the 1990s were a struggle to survive and adapt to a new reality. As the changes unfolded, the restaurant managed to maintain its place in the local culture, but at the same time it had to find new ways to stay relevant in a changing world.

The 2000s: new innovations and the continuation of traditions

In the 2000s, Kaijakka continued to adapt to the changing times and new innovations were introduced to maintain customer interest. Although the restaurant had already experienced many changes over the decades, the 2000s brought new, bold solutions.

A sauna area was built behind the strip bar, offering customers a unique way to enjoy the restaurant's services. What made the sauna special was the window in the dressing room that overlooked the strip bar. This original feature brought Kaijaká a new kind of fame.

"The special thing was that you could watch the strippers from the sauna's window."
- Kari Väätäinen, President of Tampereen Ammattiklubi

In addition, a terrace was built on the hillside in front of the restaurant, providing more seating and a pleasant outdoor space for customers. The terrace brought new vitality to Kaijaka, especially during the summer season, and helped the restaurant to attract customers even in good weather.

These reforms kept Kaijakka a vibrant part of the local entertainment scene. Throughout the 2000s, the restaurant managed to maintain its position as an unusual and original place that offered customers something that could not be found elsewhere.

2010: a decade of renewal and success

In 2010, Kaijakka again experienced changes, but this time in more stable and successful circumstances. New entrepreneurs took over the restaurant and managed to run the business mostly successfully. Despite decades of mixed success and numerous changes, in the 2010s the restaurant found a balance between tradition and innovation.

Kaijakka continued to adapt to customer demands and changing trends of the times. In 2014, the restaurant tested a new kind of food offering alongside the night bar, including seasonal dishes in collaboration with 4Vuodenaikaa, such as pork sausage glazed in Pyyniki Brewery's porter and Nygren's fish'n'chips. Although these dishes attracted interest, the experiment did not live up to expectations, and it was decided to discontinue the food rather quickly, returning to the tried and tested line of serving authentic Tampere wings.

During the decade, Kaijakka also offered individual special events, such as the Club Harha magician event, which was created by Jose Ahonen and Tuomas Malkamäki and later became Finland's longest-running club specialising in magic and mentalism. The restaurant also hosted Swing Night events a couple of times during the decade, where piano music created an elegant atmosphere, as well as Acoustic Jams and blues nights for local musicians.

One significant change was the removal of the strip bar from the restaurant's offering, reflecting changing customer preferences. To replace the strip bar, Kaijakka launched the Night Bar, which was and still is a combination of nightclub and pub atmosphere. This gave the restaurant a new look and has remained popular to this day.

Towards the end of the 2010s, Kaijakka continued to operate successfully and remained a local favourite. While the bold experiments of previous decades were part of Kaijakka's history, the new entrepreneurs were able to maintain the restaurant's unique atmosphere while adapting to the changing clientele and demands of the times.

2020s: A karaoke bar loved by young people

The 2020s brought new life and popularity to Kaijakka, especially among the younger generation. Over time, the restaurant evolved into a karaoke bar popular with young people, with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Karaoke remained an important part of Kaijakka's identity, attracting more and more visitors who enjoyed the atmosphere of singing together and having fun together.
